INDIGENOUS BACKCOUNTRY FUND

INCREASING ACCESS TO OUTDOOR RECREATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES FOR
INDIGENOUS PEOPLES

Home: Welcome

WHO ARE WE

The INDIGENOUS BACKCOUNTRY FUND is an organization that provides scholarships for Indigenous Peoples to access to gear, education, and experiences in the realm of outdoor recreation.

We support building momentum around anchoring Indigenous perspectives in the outdoor recreation community and industry, and fight to overcome the socioeconomic barriers and social stigmas that limit access to these activities.

PARTNERSHIPS=CONNECTION

In 2020, the Indigenous Backcountry Fund and On the Land Media partnered with the visionary team of ski and snowboard makers of Coalition Snow to call Indigenous femme and non-binary folk who struggled to obtain support, gear, or education in order to get out into the mountains to ride.

In doing so, the faces of a far reaching community began to emerge from the shadows (literally, the outdoor recreation industry is a mountain shadowing BIPOC and LGBTQ people on their own land, did you know?). This cohort is working hard to illuminate issues of land management, Just Transition, sustainability, social justice, and health and wellness.

In partnership we strengthen our connection to the land and each other.

On The Land Media

OTL Media was created to center Indigenous voices and experiences on the land. Their being is rooted in their relationship to the land despite generations of attempted and forced genocided, removal, and assimilation. OTL offers a contemporary understanding of what it means to be Indigenous and live in relation to what is often known as "outdoors" or "the wild."
